Riverside, CA (Sports Network) - Kyle Odister led the way with 14 points as
the Cal Poly Mustangs downed the UC Riverside Highlanders, 58-48, at SRC
Arena, in the Big West Conference opener for both teams.
For the Mustangs (5-6, 1-0 Big West), Reese Morgan pulled down eight rebounds.
Chris Harriel led the Highlanders.(3-10, 0-1) with 14 points while Chris
Patton chipped in with 12 points.
UC Riverside shot 45.8 percent from the field to start the contest, but made
only 1-of-6 from beyond the 3-point arc. Cal Poly struggled even more with
its shooting, hitting just 36.0 percent from the field and 3-of-10 from
3-point range, as the Highlanders took a 29-23 lead into halftime.
After the break, both squads had trouble finding the basket. The Mustangs
managed to make just 33.3 percent of their field goal attempts, but were
able to hold the Highlanders to only 30.8 percent from the field in the
second half. The Mustangs did have a 13-1 advantage at the free-throw line
after halftime. Up just three, 51-48, with under five minutes to play, Cal
Poly scored the final seven points of the contest to secure the victory.
The Mustangs had the edge on the boards, outrebounding the Highlanders 38-30.
UC Riverside dominated the paint, outscoring Cal Poly 30-8.
