Orlando, FL (Sports Network) - Keith Clanton registered a double-double of 26
points and 10 rebounds as the UCF Knights held off the Belmont Bruins to pick
up a 66-63 victory in the title game of the UCF Holiday Tournament.
Isaiah Sykes added 16 points on 3-of-11 shooting from the field for the
Knights (9-3), who extended their winning streak to three games. Kasey Wilson
also got into the mix with 10 points and eight boards.
Ian Clark paced Belmont (9-4) by tallying 21 points. Kerron Johnson added 18
points and eight rebounds while Trevor Noack contributed 12 points.
The Bruins came out of the gate cold and knocked down only 25.7 percent of
their field goal attempts with only one make on 11 attempts from beyond the
arc in the opening 20 minutes of action. UCF took a 33-21 advantage into the
intermission after it hit 41.9 percent of its shots from the floor including
5-of-12 from 3-point range.
Clanton drained a shot from distance to put the Knights ahead, 54-41, with
6:46 left in regulation, but Belmont staged a late comeback effort. Noack
connected on an attempt from beyond the arc with 35 seconds showing on the
clock to narrow UCF's lead to 63-61, however Belmont was unable to get any
closer as the Knights added three points at the free throw line in the final
20 seconds to secure the win. The Bruins put the pressure on the hosts after
the break by outscoring the Knights, 18-8, in the paint.
UCF could have coasted to an easy win, but its 15-of-27 performance at the
charity stripe allowed Belmont to hang around. The Bruins lost despite
committing only eight turnovers and holding a slight 41-40 edge in the
rebounding battle.
