Fort Wayne, IN (Sports Network) - Frank Gaines scored 14 points to lead
IUPU-Ft. Wayne to a 62-60 win over the South Dakota Coyotes in a Summit
League bout at Memorial Coliseum.
For the Mastodons (9-11, 2-4 Summit), Luis Jacobo added 13 points and Joe
Edwards chipped in 12 off the bench.
Trevor Gruis led the Coyotes (7-12, 3-4) with 15 points and Brandon Bos
finished with 12 points.
Both teams had nearly identical shooting performances in the first half,
with South Dakota hitting 37.5 percent from the field and Ft. Wayne shooting
37.9 percent. The Coyotes had a slightly better half from 3-point range,
making three treys to just two for the Mastodons, as the Coyotes went into
halftime leading 30-26.
The Coyotes shot 47.6 percent from the field, making 2-of-5 from 3-point
range. The Mastodons connected on 48.1 percent of their field goal attempts,
but missed all eight of their shots from beyond the 3-point arc. The Mastodons
trailed for most of the half, taking their first lead of the game with under
seven minutes to play.
Trailing by one, 57-56, with just under a minute remaining, Jacobo hit a layup
to put the home team up for good as the Mastodons held on for the victory.
The Mastodons outscored the Coyotes in the paint, 38-26. South Dakota had a
slight edge in rebounding, 31-29.
