Clarksville, TN (Sports Network) - Jerome Jones poured in 22 points as the SIU
Edwardsville Cougars took care of the Austin Peay Governors, 66-53, in an Ohio
Valley Conference tilt at the Dunn Center.
Michael Messer and Kris Davis each scored 10 points to help SIUE (6-9, 2-3
OVC) win consecutive games for the second time this season. Mark Yelovich went
for eight points and eight boards in 20 minutes off the bench.
Travis Betran scored a team-high 15 points as Austin Peay (5-14, 1-4) lost for
the 10th time in its last 11 games. Will Triggs added 10 points, while Chris
Horton matched a career-high with seven blocked shots.
Jones had surpassed his scoring average (15.1 ppg) by halftime with 16 points
on 6-of-11 shooting as SIUE went into halftime ahead, 32-25. However, foul
trouble was a concern for the Cougars, as four players had multiple fouls in
the first half.
Betran and Anthony Campbell combined for seven straight points early in the
second half as Austin Peay fought back to cut its deficit to just two, but the
Cougars never surrendered the lead, quickly building their advantage back to
double figures. SIUE shot 52.2 percent in the frame, while Austin Peay shot
just 1-of-9 from behind the arc.
With the win, SIUE avenges last year's 80-67 loss at the hands of the
Governors in the only prior meeting between the two schools.
