Valparaiso, IN (Sports Network) - Ryan Broekhoff scored 19 points and cleared
nine rebounds as the Crusaders of Valparaiso posted a 73-61 win over the Green
Bay Phoenix in Horizon League action at the Athletics-Recreation Center.
Also scoring in double figures for the Crusaders (16-5, 6-1 HL) were Kevin Van
Wijk and Matt Kenney with 12 and 10 points, respectively, the latter adding
nine rebounds of his own as the team won for the sixth straight game.
Green Bay (10-10, 4-3) was paced by Alec Brown who tallied 18 points, while
Keifer Sykes responded with 15 and Brennan Cougill 12 points and seven boards
off the bench as the Phoenix had a four-game win streak snapped.
Both teams shot below 40 percent from the floor in the first half, but even
with just 4-of-14 shooting beyond the arc in the frame, it was Valpo that
moved out to a 34-31 advantage at the break.
In the second half the Crusaders again struggled on the perimeter, 2-of-7, but
maintained their distance by hitting 19-of-22 at the free-throw line.
In addition to holding Green Bay to 4-of-17 shooting behind the 3-point line
and forcing the team into 16 turnovers, the hosts also held a 27-17 margin at
the charity stripe.
