Piscataway, NJ (Sports Network) - Bryce Cotton paced all scorers with 22
points as the Providence Friars outlasted the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, 76-72,
in a Big East Conference bout at the RAC.
LaDontae Henton was stellar as well for Providence (15-11, 7-8 Big East),
shooting 7-of-11 from the field (including 3-of-4 from 3-point range) for 18
points to go along with 10 rebounds. Kadeem Batts logged 14 points and eight
boards, while Vincent Council had 12 points and six assists for the Friars,
who have won five of six.
Dane Miller (17 points, eight rebounds) and Kadeem Jack (15 points, 10
rebounds) were both impressive off the bench for Rutgers (13-13, 4-11), which
has lost three in a row and nine of 10. Mike Poole added 11 points for the
hosts.
Rutgers outshot Providence from the field in the first half, 43.3 percent to
38.2 percent, but the Friars took a 42-33 advantage into intermission by
putting together strong showings from beyond the arc (6-of-12) and the foul
line (10-of-11).
The Scarlet Knights came back to tie the game, 52-52, with just under 11
minutes to play on a Miller layup, but the Friars ended the threat with four
straight points. Providence never led by more than seven points the rest of
the way, but it also never trailed.
Both teams took good care of the basketball with just seven turnovers each.
