Seaside, CA (Sports Network) - Matt Dobyns posted his second straight 4-under
68 on Monday to grab a 3-stroke lead after two rounds of the PGA Professional
Dobyns completed 36 holes at 8-under-par 136. He played his second round on
the Bayonet Golf Course.
The event used two Monterey Peninsula-area courses, Bayonet and Black Horse
for the first two rounds. The final 36 holes will be contested on the Bayonet
First-round leader Mike Small stumbled to a 1-over 73 to slip into a share of
second place at minus-5. The three-time champion was joined there by Paul
Scaletta (72). Both players competed on the Bayonet course on Monday.
Dobyns got off to a quick start with birdies on the second and third. He
stumbled to a bogey on the par-3 sixth, then parred his next three holes.
Around the turn, Dobyns erased that mistake with a birdie on the par-5 10th.
He closed his round with birdies on the 16th and 18th to finish three clear of
Kelly Mitchum (71), Brian Cairns (69), Stuart Smith (69) and Jim Estes (72)
share fourth place at 4-under-par 140. Bob Sowards (71) is one stroke further
back at minus-3.
Corey Prugh (72), Darrell Kestner (73) and Alan Morin (73) are tied for ninth
at 2-under-par 142.
Last year's winner David Hutsell stumbled to a 2-over 74 in round two to fall
into a tie for 32nd at 2-over-par 146.
The cut line fell at 4-over-par 148 with 77 players moving on to the final two
