West Des Moines, IA (Sports Network) - The LPGA announced on Monday that Des
Moines Golf and Country Club has been selected to host the 2017 Solheim Cup.
The club hosted the 1999 U.S. Senior Open, which drew a record 252,800
spectators. The 2017 Solheim Cup will be the 15th playing of the event.
"Bringing the Solheim Cup to Des Moines Golf and Country Club continues our
tradition of matching this world-class event with a venue that shares PING's
passion for showcasing the best in team golf," said John Solheim, PING
Chairman & CEO. "Their history of holding tournaments of this magnitude makes
them an excellent choice to host the event. While four years away, we're
already looking forward to joining Iowa and the Des Moines community in the
staging of the 15th Solheim Cup."
The Solheim Cup is a Ryder Cup-style event played between American women and
ladies from Europe.
"We are very excited to be heading to the Des Moines Golf and Country Club for
the 2017 Solheim Cup," said LPGA Commissioner Michael Whan. "The support that
the Des Moines community has shown for golf events in the area has been
tremendous. Based on the incredible welcome that we've already seen from the
city, state, and local organizers, I have no doubt that the 2017 Solheim Cup
is already on track to be the best event we've ever staged."
The European team cruised to a convincing 18-10 win at the 2013 Solheim Cup at
Colorado Golf Club. It was Europe's first win on American soil, and it was the
first time that the Europeans won back-to-back Cups. The U.S. leads the all-
time series 8-5. The 2015 Solheim Cup will be contested in Germany at the Golf
Course St. Leon-Rot.
