WINSTON-SALEM, NC -Andre Rienzo tossed seven strong inngs and earned his third win as the Dash ended a two-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory against the Nationals Monday evening at BB&T Ballpark.
Winston-Salem (8-8) jumped on the board quickly with two runs in the first inning. Two errors by Potomac to start the game put Michael Earley and Carlos Sanchez on base. A Trayce Thompson sacrifice fly scored Earley, and Brady Shoemaker singled home Sanchez for the 2-0 lead.
Dan Black led off the seventh inning with a walk before advancing to third on a Brady Shoemaker double. Marcus Semien brought home Winston-Salem's third run on a fielder's choice. Miguel Gonzalez then put down a well-placed bunt to score Shoemaker to give the Dash a 4-1 lead.
Andre Rienzo (3-0) turned in another masterful performance for the Dash. The right-hander struck out eight batters and now has 31 strikeouts on the season, the most in the Carolina League. Rienzo allowed one run on four hits in seven innings of work. Potomac (6-8) mustered its only run of the game in the second inning.
Justin Collop came out of the bullpen to pitch a scoreless inning and a third before Leroy Hunt entered the game with one out in the ninth. The right-hander allowed a hit and loaded the bases before striking out Sean Nicol to pick up his league-leading fourth save of the season.
The Dash kept the game close by stranding 12 runners on base. Winston-Salem hit only 2-for-17 with runners in scoring position.
Winston-Salem gives the ball to Spencer Arroyo (0-1, 10.80 ERA) in game two of the four game series tomorrow night. Potomac counters with Kyle Winters (1-1, 3.71 ERA). First pitch is set for 7.
Winston-Salem Dash
