Sacramento, Calif.--Greensboro United U15 Navy Girls scored two goals in a six-minute span of the second half to secure a 3-2 win over Colorado United in the first game of the US Youth Soccer Presidents Cup National Championship in Sacramento, Calif.
Allexis Taylor scored her first of two goals 19 minutes into the game to give Region III champion GUSA a 1-0 lead. The lead that lasted through the first half, thanks to Candice Corcoran's acrobatic, goal-line header to deny Colorado a sure goal in the 28th minute. Colorado, however, tied the game just four minutes into the second half, and Greensboro United responded with an onslaught on the Region IV champion's goal.
Seven minutes into the second half, Taylor finished off a cross from Hannah Henry to put Greensboro back on top 2-1. Three minutes after Taylor's goal, Hannah Van Eerdan beat a defender at the right side of the penalty area and fired a shot from 18 yards that found the far corner for a 3-1 lead with 30 minutes to play.
Colorado United cut the deficit to 3-2 with five minutes left, and GUSA was able to hang on for the victory.
"Getting a win in your first game is very important in a tournament like this," said GUSA coach Julie Isley. "It put us in a solid position. We have to be sure we are ready for Friday's game, and I think we will be."
With three points in hand, GUSA takes on North Texas representative Dallas Texans on Friday at 8am. The Texans defeated Region I Champion Virginia 1-0 Thursday morning. Greensboro will conclude the group stage on Saturday against Virginia. The two teams with the most points will meet Sunday in the National Championship game.
