Chapel Hill - The Atlantic Coast Conference men's basketball teams will contest an 18-game schedule for the first time in 2012-13 and the University of North Carolina will begin play on Sunday, January 6th at the University of Virginia.
(Today's release includes only ACC games. The full schedule has not been finalized and will be released by the league at a later date).
The Tar Heels play home-and-home series against seven schools - Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Miami, NC State and Virginia. The other four conference games include home matchups against Virginia Tech and Wake Forest and road games at Boston College and Clemson.
The ACC portion of the schedule includes seven games in January, eight in February and three in March. The ACC Tournament is March 14-17 at the Greensboro (N.C.) Coliseum.
Carolina went 14-2 in ACC play in 2011-12 and won the regular-season league title for the second year in a row and fifth time in the last six seasons. Overall, head coach Roy Williams has led UNC to six ACC regular-season titles in nine years. Williams has a 105-39 record in ACC regular-season games.
Fourteen (14) of Carolina's ACC games will be broadcast on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU, four will be shown on the ACC Network and one on CBS. The February 13th game at Duke will be televised both on ESPN and the ACC Network. Games that are shown on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU may also be seen on WatchESPN and games that are broadcast on the ACC Network may be seen on ESPN3.
The 2012-13 season is the first in which the ACC is playing an 18-game schedule. The Tar Heels played 11 league games in the ACC's inaugural season in 1953-54, 14 league games from 1955-71, 12 league games from 1972-79, 14 league games from 1980-91 and 16 league games from 1992-2012.
