San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - The San Francisco Giants placed closer
Brian Wilson on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a right elbow sprain.
Giants manager Bruce Bochy announced on Saturday that the star closer likely
has structural damage in the elbow and would consult orthopedist Dr. James
Andrews, but the righty will likely require season-ending Tommy John surgery.
The 30-year-old tied the Giants' club record with an MLB-best 48 saves en
route to a World Series championship in 2010.
Including his two appearances this season, Wilson has recorded 171 saves and a
3.21 earned run average in 315 appearances over his seven professional
seasons, all with San Francisco.
With Wilson out, the Giants will be forced to close games by committee, but
they do have options in Sergio Romo, Jeremy Affeldt and Santiago Casilla.
San Francisco also activated pitcher Ryan Vogelsong, who began the season on
the disabled list because of back pain that forced him to miss time during
spring training. He made two rehab starts for Triple-A Fresno, allowing two
runs and fanning 12 in 10 innings.
