Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Casper Wells ripped the go-ahead two-run single
in the top of the 10th inning and the Seattle Mariners topped the Arizona
Diamondbacks, 12-9, in the second test of a three-game series at Chase Field.
J.J. Putz (1-4) came out for his second inning of work after throwing a
perfect ninth to send the game into extra frames and immediately got himself
in trouble. He walked Justin Smoak and allowed a single to Dustin Ackley
before being removed in favor of Brad Ziegler.
Brendan Ryan put down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move both runners up and
Wells smoked a base hit through the right side of the infield to score pinch-
runner Munenori Kawasaki and Ackley. Ichiro Suzuki added an RBI double -- his
fourth hit of the game -- to give the Mariners a three-run cushion.
Charlie Furbush (3-1) earned the win with two innings of scoreless relief for
the M's, who have won three of their last four games. Tom Wilhelmsen worked a
perfect bottom of the 10th to nail down his fifth save of the season.
