Old Salem

Old Salem Museums & Gardens brings history to life! Salem, North Carolina was founded in 1766 and, thanks to the work of Old Salem, Inc., is still thriving today. A tour of the Historic Town of Salem will show you what life was like for the Moravians who built this town from the ground up. One of the many highlights of a tour of the town is Winkler Bakery, which was constructed in 1800. The oven is still heated with wood just as it was back then. Don't leave without trying some of the Moravian sugar cookies!

The Gardens of Old Salem are another item of interest. Each home was designed to include a garden that was to be the family's main source of food. The function and beauty of the gardens is something you don't want to miss.

As you tour the town, look for the costumed men and women who recreate historic Moravian life on a daily basis. See how ceramics, metals, and furniture were made in the 18th and 19th centuries.
