NCDOT will begin setting barrier walls on Independence Boulevard in Mecklenburg County
6/12/2013 3:35:16 PM
Intermittent lane closures will start Sunday night
CHARLOTTE- The N.C. Department of Transportation will continue work on the widening of Independence Boulevard (U.S. 74) in Charlotte at 8 p.m. Sunday, June 16, weather permitting. This work is part of the $51.2 million improvements to two miles of Independence Boulevard (U.S. 74) from Albemarle Road to Wallace Lane in Charlotte.
Contractor Devere Construction will start placing barrier walls in the median, requiring intermittent lane closures to complete the work safely. Crews will begin in the eastbound lanes between Sharon Amity Road and Conference Drive, and will work at night to minimize impact to traffic. Motorists can expect these closures between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. Crews will switch to the westbound lanes at 8 p.m. Sunday, June 23, following the same schedule.
Once the barrier walls are in place, motorists will not be able to make left turns at the following locations:
U.S. 74 West:
Wallace Lane
Conference Drive
Ashmore Drive
Glendora Drive
Charleston Drive
U.S. 74 East:
Farmingdale Drive
Wallace Lane
Left turns will be permitted at the signalized intersections of Sharon Amity Road and Idlewild Road.
This project will convert this section of Independence Boulevard to an expressway, removing existing traffic signals at Sharon Amity Road and Idlewild Road. The existing six-lane roadway will be widened to include four general purpose lanes and one bus lane in each direction. Bridges, or grade separations, will be built at interchanges with Sharon Amity Road, Idlewild Road, and Conference Drive.
The project is scheduled to be completed in October 2016.
