NCDOT will begin setting barrier walls on Independence Boulevard in Mecklenburg County

  Intermittent lane closures will start Sunday night   CHARLOTTE- The N.C. Department of Transportation will continue work on the widening of Independence Boulevard (U.S. 74) in Charlotte at 8 p.m. Sunday, June 16, weather permitting. This work is part of the $51.2 million improvements to two miles of Independence Boulevard (U.S. 74) from Albemarle Road to Wallace Lane in Charlotte.   Contractor Devere Construction will start placing barrier walls in the median, requiring intermittent lane closures to complete the work safely. Crews will begin in the eastbound lanes between Sharon Amity Road and Conference Drive, and will work at night to minimize impact to traffic. Motorists can expect these closures between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. Crews will switch to the westbound lanes at 8 p.m. Sunday, June 23, following the same schedule.   Once the barrier walls are in place, motorists will not be able to make left turns at the following locations:   U.S. 74 West: Wallace Lane Conference Drive Ashmore Drive Glendora Drive Charleston Drive U.S. 74 East: Farmingdale Drive Wallace Lane   Left turns will be permitted at the signalized intersections of Sharon Amity Road and Idlewild Road.   This project will convert this section of Independence Boulevard to an expressway, removing existing traffic signals at Sharon Amity Road and Idlewild Road. The existing six-lane roadway will be widened to include four general purpose lanes and one bus lane in each direction. Bridges, or grade separations, will be built at interchanges with Sharon Amity Road, Idlewild Road, and Conference Drive. NCDOT will close Conference Drive at Independence Boulevard in Charlotte this month

Closure is part of Independence Boulevard widening project   CHARLOTTE – The N.C. Department of Transportation will close Conference Drive at Independence Boulevard Monday, June 24, weather permitting. The closure is part of the $51 million widening project to convert Independence Boulevard to an expressway between Sharon Amity Road and Wallace Lane. Contractor Devere Construction started construction in April, and expect to complete the project by October 2016.   The closure is necessary for the contractor to start construction activities for the future Conference Drive interchange. The closure is scheduled to take up to a year.  Motorists will not be able to access Conference Drive from Independence Boulevard, or turn from Conference Drive to Independence Boulevard.   Motorists can use Monroe Road to reach businesses on Conference Drive. NCDOT will stage rolling road block on I-485 Inner Loop in Charlotte tomorrow night

  CHARLOTTE – The N.C. Department of Transportation will run a rolling road block on the I-485 Inner Loop between Nations Ford Road and I-77 (exit 67) in Charlotte beginning at 10 p.m. Thursday, June 13, weather permitting. The work is part of the $83.3 million I-485 widening project to add one lane in each direction between I-77 and Rea Road.   The rolling road block will allow crews to safely relocate drilling equipment, and should take about 30 minutes to complete.   Contractor Lane Construction has proposed completing the project in December 2014.   NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit. NCDOT will temporarily close ramps on I-485 in both directions near South Boulevard and N.C. 51 in Mecklenburg County next week

Closures are necessary to safely remove sign structure on the Inner Loop   CHARLOTTE – The N.C. Department of Transportation will be working with contractor Lane Construction to remove an overhead sign structure on the I-485 Inner Loop west of the entrance ramp from South Boulevard (Exit 65) that sustained damage from a vehicle accident May 1. The structure removal will take place over several nights, beginning at 9 p.m. Monday, June 17, weather permitting. The work is scheduled Monday – Thursday nights June 17-20, and June 24-27.   The contractor will perform a right lane closure at 9 p.m. each night, and may switch lane closures between the Inner and Outer Loop. To safely remove the structure, intermittent rolling road blocks will be performed each night in 15-20 minute increments. In addition, the following ramps will be closed up to two hours during the structure removal:   Wednesday, June 19: ·         Entrance ramp from I-485 Outer Loop to South Boulevard.   Monday, June 24: ·         Exit ramp from I-485 Outer Loop to N.C. 51 (Exit 64).   Thursday, June 27: ·         Exit ramp from I-485 Inner Loop to N.C. 51.   NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit. NCDOT will intermittently close lanes, ramps on I-85 widening project in Cabarrus County beginning tomorrow night

Motorists should stay alert while crews set bridge girders and continue N.C. 73 bridge demolition on $125.2 million I-85 widening project   CHARLOTTE – The N.C. Department of Transportation will be working with contractor Lane Construction on I-85 near the Rocky River bridge and at the interchange with N.C. 73 (Exit 55) in Concord beginning at 9 p.m. Saturday, June 8, weather permitting.   This weekend, crews will be setting bridge girders over Rocky River north of Bruton Smith Boulevard (Exit 49), and will continue demolition work at the existing N.C. 73 bridge, requiring intermittent lane and ramp closures to keep motorists and workers safe. This work is part of the 6.8-mile I-85 widening project, improving I-85 from four to eight lanes from south of Bruton Smith Boulevard (Exit 49) to north of N.C. 73.   Saturday, June 8: Crews will close the right lane on I-85 North past Exit 49 from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday, June 9, to set bridge girders over Rocky River.   Sunday, June 9: At 9 p.m., Crews will close the left lane on I-85 North at N.C. 73, and the right lane on I-85 South from the north end of the project to the exit ramp to N.C. 73; At 10 p.m., the exit ramp from I-85 South to N.C. 73 will be closed; At midnight, traffic will be shifted up and over the exit and entrance ramps on I-85 North at N.C. 73; All lane and ramp closures will be removed by 6 a.m. Monday, June 10.   Monday, June 10: At 9 p.m., crews will close the left lane on I-85 North and South at N.C. 73 At midnight, traffic will be shifted up and over the exit and entrance ramps on I-85 North and  South at N.C. 73; All lane and ramp closures will be removed by 6 a.m. Tuesday, June 11. Department of Transportation will continue work on the widening of Independence Boulevard (U.S. 74) in Charlotte at 8 p.m. Sunday, June 9, weather permitting. NCDOT Hosts Informational Workshop on Proposed Extension for Rea Road in Union County

CHARLOTTE – The N.C. Department of Transportation has scheduled a citizen workshop on Tuesday, June 25, to discuss extending Rea Road from Providence Road (N.C. 16) to Weddington Road (N.C. 84) on new location, and widening N.C. 84 to Indian Trail-Waxhaw Road in Weddington.  The 3.8-mile project is intended to improve mobility and connectivity of N.C. 84 in the project study area.   The purpose of the meeting is to present information on the project corridor, preliminary alternatives, and to receive public input on the project. Interested citizens may attend at any time during the meeting hours. NCDOT representatives will be available to answer questions and listen to comments regarding the project. Citizens will also have the opportunity to submit comments and questions in writing. CHARLOTTE – The N.C. Department of Transportation will temporarily close the exit loop ramp from the I-485 Inner Loop to Johnston Road South (U.S. 521) in Charlotte at 9 p.m. Sunday, June 9, weather permitting. The work is part of the $83.3 project to widen 9.2 miles of I-485 between I-77 and Rea Road in south Mecklenburg County.   During the closure, crews will install a crash cushion and barrier walls along the ramp, providing safety to workers during construction of the future Johnston Road flyover bridge. One lane will be closed on the Inner Loop at 9 p.m., and the ramp closure should take about two hours. NCDOT Awards $5.7 Million Contract to Resurface Roads in Union County

CHARLOTTE – The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a contract to resurface more than 19 miles of primary and secondary roads in Union County.   The $5.7 million contract was awarded to Boggs Paving Inc. of Monroe.   Work can begin as early as July 1 and is scheduled to be completed by June 20, 2014.   The following primary roads are included in the contract:   ·         3.6 miles of U.S. 74 from the beginning of the five-lane section in Wingate to the east city limits; and   ·         3.4 miles of N.C. 200 from U.S. 74 to Baucom Deese Road.   The contract also covers ten sections of secondary roads to be milled, widened, and improved with reconstructed shoulders.   This is one of 20 contracts totaling $165.1 million awarded by NCDOT this week for highway and bridge projects across North Carolina. NCDOT awarded the contracts to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The bids received on the projects awarded came in about 13.5 percent, or $25.8 million, below NCDOT estimates.   ***NCDOT***

CHARLOTTE – The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a contract to resurface more than 17 miles of primary and secondary roads in Mecklenburg County.   The $3.9 million contract was awarded to Blythe Construction Inc. of Charlotte. Work can begin as early as July 1 and is scheduled to be completed by June 20, 2014.   The following primary roads are included in the contract:   ·         A 1.4–mile section of U.S. 74 (Independence Boulevard) from Matthews-Mint Hill Road to the Union County line;   ·         A 2.7-mile section of N.C. 24 (Harris Boulevard) from U.S. 29 (North Tryon Street) to Old Concord Road, including entrance and exit ramps at the interchange with Old Concord Road, and from Grier Road to The Plaza; and   ·         A 1.6-mile section of N.C. 51 (Matthews Township Parkway) at U.S. 74, including entrance and exit ramps at the interchange.   Approximately 12 miles of secondary roads also will be milled and resurfaced.    This is one of 20 contracts totaling $165.1 million awarded by NCDOT this week for highway and bridge projects across North Carolina.
