Greensboro, NC -- Thursday morning, the YMCA of Greensboro announced where it would put the new Hayes-Taylor YMCA.
Hayes-Taylor's current building is now owned by NC A&T University, but is still in use by the Y.
YMCA Greensboro had several community meetings this year to get the public involved about what best fits their needs for the new location.
The new Hayes-Taylor YMCA will be built at Barber Park under a lease agreement approved by the Greensboro City Council in August. The YMCA of Greensboro will lease about 19 acres of the city-owned park for a $1 a year for a minimum of 40 years. At the end of the lease, the YMCA will have an opportunity to buy the land.
In a brochure from the organization, it lists features for the new Y which will include: About 55,000 square feet of indoor recreation and wellness space, as well as outdoor fields that will complement Barber Park's amenities.
There will be a strong focus on youth development including a 5-star daycare center, afterschool and camp programs, a Teen/Intergenerational Center and a Kids' Adventure Center. Healthy living programs will include physical and educational
activities for all ages.
The cost to build the Y came from private fundraising. Officials said so far the overall total is: $7,530,137
Notable gifts include:
$1,000,000 - The Cemala Foundation
$750,000 - Joseph M. Bryan Foundation
$500,000 - Edward M. Armfield Foundation
$250,000 - Lorillard
$150,000 - BB&T
